A Memorial Day Miracle

Yesterday, my boys and I-all four of us, went to the movies. This is nothing short of a miracle. If you're not a member of my immediate family, let me explain. About a year ago, my youngest son developed an intense and irrational fear of movies. I blame Horton Hears A Who. It was the last movie we saw together and it truly was terrible. Since then, my son would not talk about going to the movies and got nervous even driving by one. "We're not going to the movies, right?" He would ask. But over the past few weeks he has been exposed to multiple commercials for Night At The Museum Battle Of The Smithsonian. Apparently, watching Rodin's The Thinker flex his biceps and yell "Firepower!" was too funny to resist. So we found ourselves sitting in a darkened theater, eating skittles and cracking up. Not a bad way to spend Memorial Day.

The Old Man And The Sea

Here's the latest silhouette print that I have added to my shop. He's called The Captain. My husband gave me the inspiration for this piece. He also gave me this snappy description-"This salty sea dog always has his ship on the brain." It wasn't quite right for my shop but I promised him that I'd use it here. Every time that I look at this silhouette, I can't help but think of this image from the insane movie Time Bandits by Terry Gilliam.

A Love Note To My Boys

My mother, who is a saint, is keeping my boys for the weekend. My husband and I are doing our best to soak up every minute of peace and freedom. But, of course, I still miss my boys. So, here is a little love note in the form of their favorite video.

Signs Of Life

Several weeks ago my boys and I decided to start some plants from seeds. It was the first time I had ever tried it. We bought these handy little starter trays, lots of seed packets and got to work.

As you can see, it was a great success. We have dozens of healthy little plants sprouting. So far we have basil, oregano, lemon balm, morning glory, black-eyed susan vine, baby boo pumpkins, malva, tomatoes, peppers, spearmint, sensitive plant and marigolds. Now we're going to have to hurry up and plant them outside before they get too big!

Mother's Day

This Mother's Day was especially sweet. I received homemade gifts which are my favorite kind. My oldest made me a very sweetly packaged bundle of bath salts. My youngest helped make a darling Doodle Book for me (That's a portrait of his father there on the front page). I was also given a bevy of flowers (my second favorite kind of gift) which I'll have to show photos of later. All of this was followed by an amazing dinner. We had bratwurst with the most amazing grilled onions and peppers, pasta salad, homemade vanilla lemonade and Red Stripe beer. My husband and I had to laugh because it seems more like a Father's Day dinner but it was exactly what I wanted! I hope everyone else's Mother's Day was equally wonderful!

If Only I Had A 26 Inch Waistline

I love to peruse the vintage items on Etsy, particularly clothes. That's how I found the lovely shop My Favorite Vintage and this gorgeous dress. If only I had the money (which I do not) and a 26 inch waist (which I certainly do not) I would snatch this dress up.

Etsy Love

I have long been a fan of The Mymble's Daughter on Etsy. I think it's one of the best jewelry shops out there-simple, elegant, playful and well-crafted. I pretty much love every single piece in their shop so it was hard to pick out just a few. The Peter and The Wolf necklace is simply amazing. It's elegant and strange at the same time. Notice the goose inside the wolf? And the Little Owl Silhouette necklace is sweet and striking. I love it.

May Bouquet

I wish that you could smell these lilacs through the computer screen. You would be smiling. It is May 1st already. I read once that in Germany there is a sweet May Day tradition. If a boy likes a girl he delivers a tree decorated with colored streamers to her house the night before. Isn't that wonderful? I would wish for a Magnolia tree.
In unhappier news, we are sick with colds. Again. I can only assume that we have somehow angered the gods of cold and flu. They have decided to curse us repeatedly. Maybe I should make an offering of Kleenex and echinacea to try and appease them.
