Heidi from My Paper Crane made a wonderful list of movies she wants to see. I borrowed a few that look just wonderful.

In There Own World

By lucky happenstance, I watched both of these documentaries in a row. They are a perfect match. Both stories are about men who suffered trauma in their life and found their way back through art. Each made and populated their own rich world, a place where they could make sense of life again. Their worlds are strange, beautiful, touching and uplifting.

A Few Films

I can't wait to see both of these movies.

I watched this one last night.

It's hard to imagine it from the trailer, but it was wonderful.

It's slow, strange and very sweet.

I loved it.

More David Bowie

In The Man Who Fell To Earth, David Bowie plays an alien who has come to Earth to get water for his own planet. While here, he falls prey to drinking, drugs and television.

I can't really recommend the movie. It is slow and confusing.

However, David Bowie is absolutely beautiful in it.

And there are several moments of real elegance and style.

Last Movie in the Halloween Marathon

Our movie marathon was rather short this Halloween. But the last one, Lake Mungo, was a great one. I'd never seen it before and was pleasantly surprised with how smart and creepy it was.

Slow and atmospheric, you're never quite sure where this movie is going.

There are lots of strange twists and turns and plenty of scary moments.

I've Got A Golden Ticket

One of our favorite movie theaters, Studio 35, runs a children's summer movie series. The last movie of the summer was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I love this movie, however, I wasn't certain that my 5 year old would feel the same. It has some awfully creepy parts, especially the tunnel scene. However, we decided to brave it.

Turns out, my son didn't even make it to the tunnel part. One glimpse of Augustus Gloop getting stuck in the pipe and he let out a wail. So, we took him to the lobby to calm down, thus missing the scary tunnel scene. I thought we would be okay but, no. Violet turning into a blueberry was his undoing. He'd had enough of Willy Wonka and his chocolate factory.

Oh well, maybe when he's a little older he'll be able to appreciate it.

One of the best scenes (and songs) of the whole movie.

Some Like It Hot

Some Like It Hot is one of my favorite movies. It's sweet, romantic, hilarious and full of wonderful fashion.

Plus, it has Marilyn.

One of the things that I love most about old movies is the fashion. Strangers On A Train was full of wonderful little tidbits that sent me searching the web. Here are just a few ways to make the look yours.

Back To The Ohio

Last week we were back at the Ohio Theater to see the Hitchcock classic Strangers On A Train.
I know I've already posted a lot of pictures of the theater but I just can't seem to help myself. It is so beautiful!

I even took a few blurry snapshots of myself in the gilded mirror in the downstairs lobby.

Scary From Spain

I love a good scary movie.

But, they can't be too gross and they have to be really scary.

So when I heard about a film from Spain, called Rec, and all the amazing reviews it got, I knew that I had to see it.

And I wasn't disappointed.

It was, in a word, terrifying.

By the end of the movie, I was hiding behind my husband. I could barely bring myself to watch.

So much fun.

P.S. Apparently there was an American remake called Quarantine. It did not get good reviews.

Valley Girl

I love the movie Valley Girl.

Silly? Yes.

Romantic? Definitely.

And Nicolas Cage has never been cuter.

Like, for sure, totally.

Breakfast At Tiffany's

I first saw Breakfast At Tiffany's when I was a freshman in college.

It would run on the college movie channel over and over.

Walking down the hallway of the dorm, you could see it on every TV.

Everyone stopped to watch when it was on.

I watched it again the other day and found it to be just as good if not better.

Micmacs

I love the work of Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Amelie and Delicatessen are two of my favorite movies.

His work is so silly and beautiful and wonderful that it is impossible not to get caught up in the magic.

His upcoming movie, Micmacs, looks like another smashing success. I can't wait to see it.

The Long Hot Summer

Since it is officially June now, I thought that this would make a very appropriate post.

I love The Long Hot Summer. Although it is more than a bit hamy at times, Paul Newman and his real life wife Joanne Woodward are stupendous in it. Her character, Clara Varner, is so smart and sharp and well-dressed that I'd like to be her when I grow up.

If you still need convincing, there is a scene with Paul Newman on a balcony at night in his underwear.

Le Samourai

Le Samourai is a french, film noir movie from the 60s. Can it get any better than that?

This film is slow, sharp and elegant. I highly recommend it.
